It is really difficult for me to express empathy toward someone who is attacking me. By “attack” I mean anything from a punch in the face to the slightest criticism. As soon as I perceive a threat to my body or my ego, I go into defense mode. A barrier flies between us as I’m blinded to the other person’s feelings.
Empathy is “entering into another’s feelings.” But I don’t care about my enemy’s feelings. I care about how he or she makes me feel and that is about the extent of it. I want to care. It just isn’t natural.
